Most Egypt itineraries stay focused on Cairo and the Nile, and understandably so — but a day trip to Alexandria adds a completely different chapter to the country's history: Greco-Roman rather than pharaonic, Mediterranean rather than desert.
A different Egypt entirely
Founded by Alexander the Great in 331 BC, Alexandria was the intellectual capital of the ancient world for centuries — home to the legendary Library of Alexandria and, later, to Cleopatra herself. The city's character reflects that history: wide Mediterranean corniche views, European-influenced architecture, and a noticeably different feel from Cairo's density or Luxor's ancient monuments.
What to see in a day
The Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa, a multi-level underground necropolis blending Egyptian, Greek, and Roman funerary styles in a single burial complex, is one of Alexandria's most distinctive sites — a physical record of how thoroughly these cultures mixed here. The Citadel of Qaitbay, built on the site of the ancient Lighthouse of Alexandria (one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World), sits directly on the harbor and remains one of the best photo stops on the Mediterranean coast. The modern Bibliotheca Alexandrina, built as a tribute to the ancient library, is worth a stop for its striking architecture alone.
How far is it from Cairo?
Alexandria sits roughly three hours from Cairo by road, making it a realistic day trip rather than requiring an overnight stay — most itineraries that include it treat it as an add-on excursion near the end of a Cairo or Nile cruise program, rather than a separate destination requiring its own accommodation.
Why it's worth the extra day
If your itinerary already covers ancient Egypt thoroughly — Giza, Saqqara, Luxor, Karnak — Alexandria adds contrast rather than repetition. Seeing how Ptolemaic, Roman, and early Christian history layered on top of pharaonic Egypt gives a more complete picture of the country's history than pyramids and temples alone.
